Oases on the Camino

Some shops don't take any
money-just donations...
The Camino de Santiago hasn’t changed over the centuries. It’s almost the same as it was in the 11th century.  A pilgrim walks through the same towns….prays at the same churches…and has feet that hurt just like the millions of pilgrims who walked before.

Even today – when over 200,000 people annually walk it – there is almost no commercialization.

These little shops sell local
food, wine and pilgrim
supplies (blister equipment!).
They seem to show up when
they're most needed....
Some Oases look like camp
 sites.
At the most, there might be a little stand selling scallop shells…or if you’re really lucky, an entrepreneur opens an oasis on the Camino! We make it a practice to always buy something from -- or make a donation to -- these hard working people.

An oasis appears on the trail when you least expect it – offering cold drinks and often hot food.

It’s hard to explain how wonderful these places are after we’ve been walking for several hours.

And most of the people running them have walked the Camino
themselves!

Would you like to buy a
 scallop shell?
